[SID2015] What is the Answer for Flexible & Transparent with Excellent Image Quality?

In SID 2015 Display Week (31 May – 5 June), LG Display’s CTO In Byeong Kang gave a keynote speech. He explained that future display in everyday lives will be actively applied to home, office, street, and mobile device areas through various applications including window, ceiling, mirror, kitchen, automotive, desk, commercial, and wearables. He added that OLED will be the answer to key technology of flexible display (curved, rolling, and folding), large-area transparent, and excellent image quality.

Key issues of flexible are bending radius and reliability. Kang emphasized that in order to reduce the bending radius, thinner substrate is needed, and to improve reliability, new material, components development, and internal and external shock mechanism research is important. He mentioned that although OLED is good for transparent’s transparency, light control, and reflectivity as key technology, LCD and LED display also have advantages of their own in transparent display realization. Kang concluded the presentation with the emphasis on the need of expansion into automotive, watch, architecture, and furniture companies from existing panel, material, and components companies’ ecosystem for commercialization of flexible and transparent display.

LG Display is currently mass producing plastic OLED panel for smart watch, and aiming for 80% automotive display market occupation in 2018 with approx. US$ 2,000,000,000,000 of revenue. In SID 2015, LG Display exhibited 18 inch rollable OLED panel, and 12.3 inch automotive OLED panel. Through the OLED and ecosystem’s expansion, it is anticipated LG Display will lead flexible and transparent display market following OLED TV.SID2015

[Analyst Column]The key technology to realize 8K OLED TV is transparent hybrid encapsulation technology

Along with LG Electronics, Panasonic and Skyworth joined the UHD TV industry as releasing the 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch UHD OLED TVs at CES2015.

In response to this, the LCD TV manufacturers unveiled numerous new LCD TVs at CES2015 combining different technologies of QD, HDR, and curved design.

OLED is catching up with LCD in terms of resolution and LCD began to compete with OLED in respect of curvature and color.

There were competitions with regard to resolution between OLED and LCD in the history of smartphones. As the resolution of small and medium LCD improves in order to distinguish itself from OLED starting from 200ppi in 2010 to over 500ppi through the Retina (326ppi), OLED accomplished the equivalent resolution through the FMM mask and pentile technologies.

The LCD TV industries are anticipated to develop products with ultrahigh resolution in consideration of the small and medium OLED. And the OLED TV industries are reviewing the technologies to answer to this trend of ultrahigh resolution.

The resolution over 8K is available for OLED TV by either converting the bottom emission structure which is currently applied to the existing 4K OLED TV to the top emission structure with higher aperture ratio or producing the RGB OLED panel with the solution process.

Sony already developed and introduced the world’s first 4K OLED TV with the top emission technology at CES2013. Employed for Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy series, the top emission structure can be applied to a large area but the complication is in the transparent encapsulation.

It is hard to use the frit technology currently used in small and medium to a large OLED for its durability issue. The hybrid encapsulation method using the transparent encapsulation film emerges as the optimum alternative and the developments are set in that direction.

The substantial market growth is expected as the transparent hybrid encapsulation technology is critical in realizing a large area flexible OLED and transparent OLED besides the ultrahigh resolution using the top emission.

LG Display successfully developed world’s first flexible and also transparent OLED.

LG Display succeeded in developing world’s first flexible and transparent OLED.
LG Display announced the technological development of world’s first 18-inch flexible OLED and transparent OLED of same size, disclosing at the ‘national project workshop for transparent flexible display development’ to be held from July 10 till July 11.
It is considered that LG Display secured the foundation technology for developing a large screen transparent flexible display through the simultaneous development of flexible and transparent OLED this time.
The flexible OLED that LG Display developed is 18-inch in size with HD resolution (1200 X 810) nearly 1 mega pixel quality, and this is the largest OLED in the world, realizing the radius of curvature of 30R. This means it can be rolled up to a radius of 3cm with no operational complications and implies that it is possible to implement a large panel rollable TV over 50 inches in the future.
In order to realize maximum radius of curvature even on 18-inch screen, LG Display used Polymide film of polymer materials on a substrate that TFT and organic matters are deposited, reducing the thickness and increasing flexibility drastically.
Furthermore, this concurrently developed transparent OLED is of same size and resolution as flexible OLED and the transparency is 30% or higher realized by self-developed transparent pixel design technology. It is a radical increase of transparency, given that transparency of existing LCD based transparent display is about 10% or so.
LG Display maximized the degree of completion by lowering the haze caused by circuit element and film down to 2%.
The transparent flexible display is a national project of the future industry-leading technology development program promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology, and LG Display is the leading participants of total 36 organizations of industries, academies, and institutes, aiming to develop a large 60-inch transparent and flexible display by 2017.
According to In-Byung Kang, Senior Vice President and Head of the R&D Center at LG Display, “Pioneered OLED TV market, LG Display is leading future applied technology of OLED,” and “Though there still are many challenges to be resolved, we are confident in developing transparent flexible display of over the 60-inch screen UHD (Ultra High Definition) screen with transparency of 40% and a curvature radius of 100R by 2017.”
