Not Only Samsung and LG, but BOE and JDI Also Shows OLED Surge in SID

During the SID 2016, not only Samsung Display and LG Display, but other companies including BOE, Japan Display (JDI), and Tianma also presented OLED. The extent of OLED by Korea, China, and Japan drew much attention.

In SID 2016 (22-27 May), these companies exhibited many new OLED panels for diverse devices such as smartphone, VR, and TV.

Samsung Display revealed rollable panel, diverse 5 inch level OLED panel products such as VR panel with 806 ppi, the highest value within the industry, and Bio Blue, a VR panel which minimized harmful blue light.

LG Display showed 77 inch UHD OLED panel for TV, 55 inch dual side panel for signage, 65 inch concave OLED, and demonstrated their strength as the leader in large size OLED panel.

At this exhibition, BOE revealed flexible OLED display for mobile device. Particularly, the 4.35 inch foldable panel is BOE’s first. The product’s bending radius of 5 mm and has the brightness of 350 nits.  

Tianma displayed 55 inch on-cell touch equipped TFT-HD AMOLED panel. The flexible display has 270 ppi and bending radius of 20 mm.

JDI exhibited flexible plastic OLED (POLED). The 5.2 inch product has 423 ppi with the resolution of 1080 x 1920.

Quantum dot sector also presented a strong front against OLED in SID 2016. Nanosys and QD Vision exhibited OLED TV and quantum dot TV next to each other and presented merits of quantum dot.

According to QD Vision, quantum dot could consume 50% less power compared to OLED. Nanosys explained that while white OLED panel TV shows brightness of only up to 500 nits, their own quantum dot TV can actualize 1,200 nits of brightness.

Samsung Display and LG Display will showcase the technologies for next-generation displays at the 2016 Society for Information Display( SID 2016 ) conference, which is being held at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco from May 22 to 27.
LG Display’s next-generation technologies including OLED TVs and automotive displays will be on show at the company’s booth from May 24 to 26 At this year’s SID 2016 , LG Display is placing its emphasis on the advantages of OLED and in particular the superior picture quality it offers along with its unlimited potential in application and design. The company will present its 77-inch Ultra HD OLED TV panel which provides the same level of color gamut in displays used by film-editing professionals.
It boasts unbeatable picture performance with perfect black expression and improved brightness by applying the High-Dynamic-Range (HDR) technology. LG Display will also showcase future concept displays such as 55-inch double-sided and 65-inch concave OLED displays for signage to meeting customers’ expectation for what’s coming next.
For customers in the rapidly rising automotive display market, LG Display will showcase its automotive display product line-ups from cluster displays to the Center Information Display (CID), including a 12.3-inch curved plastic OLED display and a 12.3-inch LCD panel realizing over 1,000 nit of brightness.
LG Display will also highlight its lifelike picture quality 31.5-inch 8K4K monitor and 14-inch Ultra HD resolution notebook panel embedded with high resolution and touch functions. In addition, the company will showcase a range of displays featuring its exclusive touch embedded technology, Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT), from the 6-inch mobile display, and 9.2-inch and 10.3-inch automotive displays that feature touch response even with a gloved hand, to the world’s first touch-enabled 15.6-inch notebook panel and 23-inch monitor panel.

The 5.7 inch flexible OLED that will be shown at Samsung booth has the highest industry resolution of QHD (2560×1440), and it is ultra-thin with 0.3 mm thickness.
The 5.7 inch rollable AMOLED that can be rolled to the width of a finger weighs 5g. With resolution of FHD (1920×1080) and curvature radius of 10R, the company explains that this has the best specs in terms of resolution and curvature radius of rollable products.
The 13.3 inch and 14 inch QHD AMOLED for laptop used on-cell touch technology. By internalizing the touch censor within the AMOLED panel, the thickness was reduced by 45% compared to LCD to 1.01 mm and weight by 33% to 120 g (13.3 inch). Samsung Display will also show 5.5 inch UHD (3840×2160, 806 ppi) prototype for VR. The number of pixels increased by approximately 2.3 times compared to QHD which is mainly used at present.
Samsung’s 65 inch UHD LCD product increased contrast ratio to 6,000:1 and reduced reflectance level to 2.3%, and HDR actualization is possible in mainstream products. The company will also display 65 inch UHD curved slim product with 5.9 mm thickness.
Samsung will also present Light Field technology related to 3D dimensional video that often appears in science fiction. The technology actualizes an object that looks different from different viewing angles on display and produces 3D film with high degree of completion. The digital hologram technology that allows 3D images to be projected will also be shown. These technologies could be applied to 3D pop-up book, 3D game, VR, AR, HUD, etc. in future.
Additionally, the company will show diverse lineup from Central Information Display to Cluster including 12.3 inch curved display equipped with automotive POLED and 12.3 inch product with high resolution and high brightness of over 1,000 nit.

Following Foxconn’s takeover of Sharp, which company will end up suffering the most?

On March 30, Taiwan’s Hon Hai’s Foxconn agreed to buy Sharp for about $ 3.5 billion. With this decision, there is much focus on how it will affect the global display market.

 

Korean companies leading the global display market such as Samsung Display and LG Display as well as key display companies in Japan, China, and Taiwan are keenly interested in this takeover.

 

Some experts analyze that, out of these companies, the one being most threatened by this takeover will be Japan Display.

 

◆ Japan Display, May Not be Able to Retain OLED Supply for iPhone

 

As it became known that iPhone will replace the LCD panel with OLED for future iPhone, it is expected to create a great business within the OLED market. 3 companies, Samsung Display, LG Display, and Japan Display, have been considered as the most likely supplier for iPhone’s OLED panel.

 

Some media have reported that Samsung Display and Apple have already signed OLED supply agreement, and LG Display and Japan Display are known to be having a heated competition to become the secondary supplier.

 

However, this Foxconn’s takeover of Sharp could break the big 3. Of these, experts estimate that Japan Display is most likely to be pushed out.

 

iPhone’s largest LCD panel supplier is LG Display, with over 50%. Following this, Samsung Display and Japan’s Sharp are the second and third LCD panel supplier for iPhone but the order has not been confirmed.

 

As it became known that Apple will utilize OLED, Japan Display with investment plans for OLED mass production line rose as the possible panel supplier for Apple. Rather than Sharp, Japan Display became a strong candidate for OLED supplier for iPhone along with Samsung Display and LG Display.

 

However, it all changed when Foxconn bought Sharp. Sharp does not have OLED line for mobile device at the moment, but its small device LCD line is LTPS based that could be transformed to OLED. Foxconn, expected to invest in OLED sector, is likely to turn Sharp’s small device LCD line into OLED line.

 

Furthermore, Foxconn is Apple’s key production collaborator. Worse, even Foxconn’s newly bought Sharp is one of Apple’s panel suppliers. Excluding Samsung Display and LG Display with verified OLED technology prowess, Apple could choose Foxconn with closer connections rather than Japan Display as an OLED supplier.

 

One display industry expert explained that Foxconn could push out Japan Display regarding iPhone OLED supplier issue, and even if that does not happen, it will have very narrow standing. He added that although compared to Samsung Display and LG Display, Foxconn and Japan Display are both latecomers in OLED sector, Foxconn is in a more favorable position due to its solid relationship with Apple.

Leaders Who Created Korean OLED Industry

On January 28, OLED Frontier Forum, ‘OLED, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow’ was held in Seoul, Korea. With approximately 250 attendees from the industry, academia, and government organizations, experts discussed scenes from the early days of OLED development, the current market and technology competition status, and future industry development issues.

 

President of UBI Research, Choong Hoon Yi, was the first speaker of the first section, and gave a presentation titled ‘Korean OLED Industry Creating Something from Nothing’, introducing figures from the initial stages of OLED development and now. In 1996, Yi, in charge of Strategy Technology Planning of Samsung Display Devices (now Samsung SDI), calculated OLED to be the most powerful display inheriting from LCD. Asserting the need for development, Yi led the OLED research development investment.

 

Discussing the most influential people within the 20 years of OLED industry, Yi first mentioned Samsung SDI’s vice chairman Soon-taek Kim, explaining that despite the IMF crisis Kim decided on AMOLED investment and laid the foundation for Samsung’s main role within the OLED industry. On top of this baiss, Ho Kyoon Chung (then Samsung SDI’s vice president) began active development of small size AMOLED, and Samsung Display’s vice president Sung-Chul Kim is responsible for Samsung’s OLED for mobile device of now. Yi also introduced Miwon Commercial’s CEO Kyu-Ha Chung (then Samsung Electronics executive director) as the key player who suggested vision for large area OLED through world’s first development of 40 inch WRGB OLED. Within LG Display, vice chairman Sang-beom Han was mentioned as the person responsible for OLED TV’s market release through difficulty decision of large area OLED investment, and CTO In-byeong Kang for technological advances as the person in charge of OLED development. For academia, Yi discussed Seoul National University’s Professor Changhee Lee as the first person in Korea who began white OLED development and contributed to OLED standardization. Professor Jin Jang of Kyung Hee University suggested oxide TFT’s commercialization prospect and mentored many people who contributed to Korean OLED industry. Yi, together with Sung-Chul Kim and Dr. Nam-Yang Lee (then LG Philips LCD director) established OLED sector within Korea Display Industry Association. During the talk, he introduced how this formed the inter cooperative structure with OLED industry companies and contributed to Korean OLED industry success on the basis of governmental support.

In the second section of the event, LG and Samsung’s CTOs presented on OLED industry’s key issues, and future innovative technology. The 2 companies both discussed current technology, products and projects that need to be solved in order to increase the competitiveness of OLED.

During the last section, the speakers panel discussion handled how to respond to China’s rapid growth. The speakers all agreed on the need for acquisition and hold on experts, corporation between industry and academy, and between companies, and new application areas.

LG OLED TV Records Highest Monthly Sales Volume

LG Electronics’ strategy of OLED promotion and OLED TV price reduction appears to be working successfully.

 

On November 3, LG Electronics reported that the October sales exceeded 4,500 units, twice the volume of early 2015. Particularly, the sales volume of the first week of October exceeded 2,000 units and contributed to breaking the monthly sales volume record.

 

The OLED TV’s bigger price drops from the last week of September seem to have led the high sales volume in the first week of October. According to Amazon, 55inch FHD curved OLED TV fell to US$ 1,797 from October, approximately a 28% drop from August’s US$ 2,499. 55inch UHD curved OLED TV and UHD flat OLED TV also fell to the US$ 2,000 range, making the price difference with UHD LCD TV to be US$ 500. This price competitiveness is analyzed to contribute to the increased sales volume.

 

Aggressive marketing is also a factor for this sales volume growth. In September, LG Electronics installed OLED TV in 39 key airports in 23 countries including the US, Germany, and Russia, and revealed plan to install approximately 200 units of OLED TV until the end of October. Advertisement of OLED TV can also be easily seen in Korean subway stations. LG Electronics’ OLED promotion strategy, revealed during the Q2 performance announcement appears to be effective.

 

Recently, LG Electronics announced their aim to lead the OLED TV market through strengthening OLED=LG image and OLED TV and UHD TV product diversification.

LGE to Compete with UHD OLED TV Price in 2016

On July 29, LG Electronics announced its earnings results at LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, South Korea. Representatives of each business departments, including LGE’s CFO Jung Do Hyun, explained the second quarter results and third quarter outlook.

 

Regarding the poor sales results of this quarter, LGE gave the decrease in sales and business profit in most of the growth market as the reason. The decrease was analyzed to be from sudden fluctuations in foreign exchange rate which led to global economic downturn. Essentially, it seems LGE believes that their market strategy is not at fault and that the decrease in demand in TV market and weaker global foreign exchange rate led to the fall in profit.

 

The competitiveness of Home Entertainment (HE) business department increased through strengthening product mix focusing on premium products. However, due to the sudden fluctuations in foreign exchange rate and seasonal factors the global market diminished and an 11% decrease in sales was recorded compared to the previous quarter. Jung explained that the sales in Europe, Central and South America, and Russia increased but most of the growth market showed economic downturn due to weak foreign exchange rate which led to the decrease in sales. However, he forecast that in the third quarter, the premium TV market will continue to grow and increase the UHD OLED TV sales.

 

Additionally, Jung commented while low-to-medium priced products will be released, sales activity will focus on premium products and announced as the yield of UHD OLED TV panel is increasing rapidly, they will be able to compete in price from mid-2016. He also made a positive estimation that the market will show a growth rate once the foreign exchange rate fluctuations stabilize.

 

According to UBI Research, there is approximately US$ 2,000 prices difference between UHD OLED TV and SUHD TV, looking at 55inch size in early July. Within less than a month, on July 24, the difference was reduced to US$ 1,700; it is estimated that UHD OLED TV will be able to compete against SUHD TV price from next year.

 

Answering a question on competition with Chinese companies, LGE clarified that although their growth is rapid, LGE is ahead in terms of patents, quality, and brand power. Although they mentioned that Chinse companies have growth foothold with their large market share within domestic market in China, LGE concluded that the real global growth is not very great. However, LGE admitted that Chinse companies are definitely superior in cost effectiveness. To combat this, LGE announced they will focus on premium products and increase competitiveness, and form strategy of supplying non-premium products to the growth market.

 

LGE recorded sales of approximately US$ 1,600,000,000, a 0.5% decrease from the previous quarter, and business profit of approximately US$ 200,000,000, a 20% decrease from the previous quarter.

In SID 2015 Display Week (31 May – 5 June), LG Display’s CTO In Byeong Kang gave a keynote speech. He explained that future display in everyday lives will be actively applied to home, office, street, and mobile device areas through various applications including window, ceiling, mirror, kitchen, automotive, desk, commercial, and wearables. He added that OLED will be the answer to key technology of flexible display (curved, rolling, and folding), large-area transparent, and excellent image quality.

Key issues of flexible are bending radius and reliability. Kang emphasized that in order to reduce the bending radius, thinner substrate is needed, and to improve reliability, new material, components development, and internal and external shock mechanism research is important. He mentioned that although OLED is good for transparent’s transparency, light control, and reflectivity as key technology, LCD and LED display also have advantages of their own in transparent display realization. Kang concluded the presentation with the emphasis on the need of expansion into automotive, watch, architecture, and furniture companies from existing panel, material, and components companies’ ecosystem for commercialization of flexible and transparent display.

LG Display is currently mass producing plastic OLED panel for smart watch, and aiming for 80% automotive display market occupation in 2018 with approx. US$ 2,000,000,000,000 of revenue. In SID 2015, LG Display exhibited 18 inch rollable OLED panel, and 12.3 inch automotive OLED panel. Through the OLED and ecosystem’s expansion, it is anticipated LG Display will lead flexible and transparent display market following OLED TV.SID2015

The Reason WRGB OLED TV Can Only Succeed

It has already been 2 years since OLED TV entered the market. LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics opened the market together with the release of 55 inch FHD OLED TV, but currently the market is developing around LG Elec. and some Chinese set companies.

 

Samsung Elec.’s OLED TV is using RGB OLED structure similar to the OLED panel applied to Galaxy series, and LTPS TFT. On the other hand, LG Elec. is using WRGB OLED, developed by LG Display, and oxide TFT.

 

However, Samsung Elec. stopped OLED TV production in the second half of 2013, and began to express negative opinions regarding OLED TV industry since CES2014. They determined OLED TV to be underdeveloped and required approximately 3 more years of further work. Also, as 8 mask of LTPS TFT or oxide TFT was used to develop OLED panel for TV, and therefore higher cost compared to LCD, Samsung and many other display experts continued to view it negatively. Various media was filled with unfavorable articles particularly regarding whether LG Display alone could maintain the OLED panel industry which required massive amount of investment.

 

Despite this, WRGB OLED received legitimate recognition with the start of 2015. First, with the 3 stack tandem OLED structure and HDR technology, they were able to provide sharper picture quality than LCD with the peak intensity of up to 800 nit. Second, 8 mask oxide TFT production processes were reduced to 4 mask production and lowered investment cost, which led to a more reasonable panel price.

 

The halved number of masks in the TFT production signifies that the number of processes can be reduced and increase the yield rate. It also means the amount of large scale investment essential to the TFT production can be reduced by 50%.

 

The rival display of LCD mostly uses 4 mask process of a-Si TFT. If the existing Gen8 line, with capacity of 200K, is changed to LTPS TFT or 8 mask oxide TFT process, the capacity is reduced to approx.. 90K and increases the TFT production cost by more than 200%. However, in 4 mask production, the LCD line can be altered to TFT exclusive line for OLED without any loss of capacity; this would place the TFT production cost on the same level as LCD. Of course, as the existing line can be used without additional factory construction will reduce the investment cost even further.

 

Therefore, if OLED is developed using 4 mask oxide TFT technology, theoretically the production cost falls to the level of LCD panel production price excluding BLU. As the large area OLED panel market is in early stages, the OLED evaporator and encapsulation equipment price is still high, but the equipment price will fall rapidly within 2-3 years and the investment cost is also expected to be reduced.

 

The display market research organizations are estimating the large OLED panel price to be at least $3,000, but according to the 2015 Annual Report by UBI Research, the LG Display’s 55 inch FHD OLED panel price is only expected to be around $900, and a 55 inch UHD OLED panel is to be around $1,400. UBI Research analyses that there is some difference from the actual sales price as LG Display’s M2 line production and yield rates are low, but if the full capacity of 26K is reached and the yield rises to above 80%, the current supply price can easily be met. Particularly if the large scale mass production system is established with the addition of M3 and M4 lines, it is predicted that OLED panel price will be reduced so that there will only be 1.1 times difference compared to LCD panel.

 

There are many experts who mistakenly predict that large area OLED panel, which has higher price tag compared to the continued investment cost as it is still in early stages, will fall behind LCD’s cheaper price strategy. However, much like how TFT-LCD overwhelmed the Braun-tube market, OLED TV will also be a household item within a few years.

 

2015 Annual Report by UBI Research writes that in 2016 when M2 line will be operating normally, approx. 1.7 million units of UHD OLED panel production will be possible, and predicts the investment of M3 line in 2016, with the shipment of approx. 2.7 million units of OLED TV in the market in 2017. This is a much weaker figure compared to the almost 200 million units of LCD panel market for TV, but within the new UHD TV market with 55 inch or higher it is expected to hold a large market share.

LG Electronics unveiled its secret weapon, G Flex2 at CES2015. Produced with the plastic OLED from LG Display, the smart phone G Flex2 features relatively enhanced resolution from the HD level resolution to FHD (403ppi) though the display has reduced from 5.99-inch to 5.5-inch when compared to the existing G Flex released in 2013.

G Flex2 is the up to date curved smart phone equipped with the latest 64bit Octa-Core CPU and Snapdragon 810 processor from Qualcomm. The frontal curvature of 700R is also the same as in the G Flex, but the backside is 650R, increasing the sense of grip. For its 700R display, it provides much better sound quality by reducing the gap between the user’s face and the phone. With the self-healing back cover as in the G Flex, it just removes various scratches occurred in daily life. 

LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics sold the curved smart phones in 2013 at the same time. LG Electronics’ G Flex was the same panoramic design as now but Samsung Electronics competed by releasing a smartphone curved from left to right to emphasize a firm grip.
